Ismantorp castle

Description

The ancient castle Ismantorp Öland baffles scientists. It differs from the othercastles on the island, including through its many gates and the high-densitybuildings. Ismantorp is today surrounded by wetlands in the forest Mittlandsskogen and is both an archaeological mystery that is a popular destination.

Ismantorp castle was first described in a work from in 1634. It has alsoattracted the attention of Carl Linnaeus and several fellow travelers andantiquarians. Since the 1800s, scientists have sought the answer to thecastle dating, uses and history. It is distinguished particularly by their well-preserved walls of its unusual situation where the center of the castle is situated on an elevation. Ismantorp castle has 88 visible foundations and nine gates. Virtually all the space inside the city walls has been occupied bysettlements. There are traces of a swarm of large and small houses along the network of streets and lanes linking the castle area all parts of the gates of the fortification wall. The floor plan resembles a medieval society, and this is also a square in the center of the castle buildings.

The theories of Ismantorp use differ. Fortifications suggest a protective function but also represent the large number of ports a defense technologicalweakness. Ismantorp has been compared to the great Slavic citizens whoboth served as protection and as shrines. Other research sees the castle as part of the rest of the stock of guarantees on Öland. Ismantorp would, on thistheory be included in a form of country defense with a unified organization.

During the summer of 2000 was performed less archaeological excavationsin the castle. A number of typical items found, including an arrowhead and asuit of iron buckle. So far, it appears from the findings that the castle has been used between the years 300-500 AD
