Vaxholms fortress
Description
The fortress contains today Vaxholm Fortress Museum with exhibitions about including Sweden’s coastal defense for 500 years, life in the fortbefore, dungeons and preparedness in the archipelago during World War II.
Vaxholm Vaxholm or castles, is a now obsolete fortifications adjacent town of Vaxholm in the Stockholm archipelago. 1548 built the first plant, in 1604added additional reinforcements. 1833 began a total renovation that was togive the fort its present appearance.
Vaxholm Citadel is located in the Stockholm archipelago. From the time of Gustav Vasa until the First World War, the castle part of the Swedish armed forces. Its importance for Sweden’s defense has varied.

- The fortress was used in 1700 - and 1800's as a prison. Some of those locked up were "big thief" Jacob Guntlack, publicist Magnus Jacob Crusenstolpe and General Georg Carl von Döbeln. As curiosities may be mentioned that even Pippi Longstocking's father sat here, in the movie Pippi Longstocking on the Seven Seas, where the fortress had to act fast pirate. Vaxholm is a national monument since 1935 and administered by the National Property Board.
